How to Install Notepadqq on Ubuntu/CentOS & Other Distributions

If you’re looking for Notepad++ like text editor for Linux, There’s an alternative available for Linux named: Notepaddqq which is designed for developers to note down tasks or edit code and supports up to 100 languages.

In Linux, you can install Notepad++ through wine but it’s not the same as using a native Linux editor.

Notepadqq – What Is Notepadqq?

If you’re a fan of Notepad++ in Windows then you surely want the same editor to be installed on all platforms. And this is where Notepadqq comes with almost the same features and UI.

And there are plenty of options for text and code editors in Linux such as Atom, VSCode, Bracket, and SciTE. Most of them are even better than Notepadqq when it comes to debugging and features, but it totally depends upon you which code editor is better for you to write.

Install Notepadqq in Ubuntu Linux Distribution

Let’s install Notepadqq in Ubuntu and you can add the repo and install it on other Ubuntu-based Linux distributions such as Linux Mint, PinguyOS, and Elementary OS.

1. Open the terminal and add the PPA using the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:notepadqq-team/notepadqq

add repository for notepaddqq

2. Update using the following command:

sudo apt-get update

apt update notepadqq

After you have added the repository and updated the system, we’re gonna install the Notepaddqq package.

3. Execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install notepadqq

apt install notepadqq

After executing the command it will install the Notepadqq and you can run the application through the terminal or application manager.

You can type: notepadqq in the terminal to run the code editor or search by the application manager.

Install Notepadqq in Linux via Snap

You can install notepadqq through snap if you’re distribution is compatible with the snap packaging system.

Execute the following command to install Notepadqq via Snap:

sudo snap install notepadqq

Install Notepadqq in CentOS Linux Distribution

Installing Notepadqq in CentOS is just easy as installing it in Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution. First, we’re gonna download the Sea-devel repository from within /etc/yum.respos.dor which is required to install Notepadqq on CentOS 7 or 8.

sudo wget -O /etc/yum.repos.d/sea-devel.repo http://sea.fedorapeople.org/sea-devel.repo

Now, just simply install the notepaddqq using the following command:

sudo yum install notepadqq

After that, you successfully installed notepadqq on CentOS 7 or CentOS 8 distro.

Install Notepadqq in other Linux Distributions

To install Notepadqq on any other distribution system apart from the installation method which we shared here, you can directly get the source code from the Github repository and build your package for any Linux Distro.

Uninstall Notepaddqq installed from PPA

If you ever want to uninstall and remove notepadqq from the Linux distribution you can do it by using the following command.

sudo apt-get remove notepadqq
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:notepadqq-team/notepadqq
